Onyx Surfaces
in Asheville, NC
Custom-fabricated in our Fletcher shop and installed by our own crew. From softly glowing backsplashes to dramatic fireplaces and statement walls, onyx turns light and natural stone into one unforgettable feature.
What Makes Onyx
So Extraordinary?
Architectural onyx is a banded, calcite-rich natural stone prized for its color, movement and ability to transmit light. Its flowing layers form as mineral-rich water deposits calcite over time, producing patterns that can look like amber, clouds, wood grain or watercolor.
Backlighting reveals the quality that makes onyx unlike any other surface. Warm LED panels placed behind a carefully selected slab illuminate its depth and veining, turning a bar front, fireplace surround or feature wall into a functional work of art.
Onyx is softer and more delicate than granite or quartzite. We recommend it for statement installations and lower-traffic surfaces where its beauty can be enjoyed without heavy daily wear. Our team will help you choose the right slab, support, finish and lighting plan for the application.
Designed to Be
the Focal Point
Naturally Translucent
Onyx filters light through its mineral bands. With properly diffused LED backlighting, the entire surface can glow from within.
Unrepeatable Pattern
Every slab carries its own layers, color shifts and crystalline detail. The finished feature is genuinely one of a kind.
Bookmatch Potential
Companion slabs can be arranged in mirrored layouts, creating dramatic, symmetrical movement across a large wall or fireplace.
Sculptural Color
Honey, ivory, rust, green and cloudlike white tones give onyx a depth that paint, tile and printed surfaces cannot reproduce.
Custom Fabricated
We template, cut and finish each piece in our Fletcher shop, coordinating seams, edge details and support for the specific installation.
Memorable by Design
Onyx is not meant to disappear into a room. It creates the feature guests notice first and remember long after they leave.

Onyx Surface Questions
We Hear Every Day
Can onyx be backlit?
Yes. Translucence is onyx’s signature quality. A properly designed system uses evenly spaced, diffused LED lighting behind the slab so the stone glows consistently without bright hot spots. Lighting, support and access for future service should all be planned before fabrication.
Is onyx a good kitchen countertop material?
Onyx can be used on low-traffic countertops, but it is softer and more sensitive to acids and abrasion than granite or quartzite. For a busy working kitchen, we usually recommend a more durable stone and reserve onyx for a backsplash, bar front, island panel or other statement feature.
Does onyx need to be sealed?
Many onyx installations benefit from a penetrating sealer, but sealing does not make the stone scratch-proof or acid-proof. We will recommend the appropriate treatment for the specific slab, finish and application.
How do you clean an onyx surface?
Use a soft cloth and a pH-neutral cleaner made for natural stone. Avoid vinegar, citrus cleaners, abrasive powders and harsh bathroom chemicals, which can etch or dull the calcite-rich surface. Wipe spills promptly and use coasters or protective mats on horizontal surfaces.
How much does a custom onyx feature cost?
Onyx is a premium material, and the installed price varies widely with slab selection, size, reinforcement, edge work, bookmatching and backlighting. Bring your measurements or plans to our Fletcher showroom and we can prepare a project-specific estimate.
